Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Advancement and the Assistant Vice President for University Relations, the Senior Director of Communications will plan, execute, and evaluate a comprehensive communications and marketing program for the College of Science, and aligns those activities with university wide communications, marketing and branding initiatives. The senior director will have a strong record of progressive experience in today's communications fields, which includes evidence of strong writing and editing, interpersonal skills, presentation skills, and marketing skills; proficiency in using word processing, image processing, content management system, and social media tools; must also have a strong understanding of effective graphic design and branding principles and the use of the Internet as a medium of communication; ability to manage multiple and competing priorities in a dynamic environment. This position will work collaboratively with the unit's recruiting and student affairs teams to provide information to prospective and current students, positioning the college to attract more students and enhancing effectiveness of student retention efforts. This position will work collaboratively with the members of the unit's advancement team to pursue and promote the overall institutional goals related to communications, fundraising, and alumni engagement.
The College of Science provides the scientific infrastructure of Virginia Tech. Through hands-on learning in classrooms and labs and undergraduate research programs, students' work with renowned faculty to solve complex issues locally, regionally, and globally. The college teaches biological sciences, chemistry, economics, geosciences, mathematics, physics, psychology, and statistics, as well as innovative areas such as integrated science, computational modeling and data analytics, and nanoscience in our Academy of Integrated Science. The new School of Neuroscience is focused on disorders of the brain as well as mind itself, including decision-making, behavior, and creativity.
